Happy Birthday Buddha!
The Buddha came into this world for one express purpose: to challenge us to look directly at the meaning of life and death and show us the way to transcend the endless cycles of suffering caused by our ignorance of or refusal to face the truth. In the Buddha’s Birthday Celebration Ceremony, we are inspired and encouraged to reflect on the meaning of our own birth and death and to truly get to know the Buddha waiting to be born in each of us.

Meditation/mindfulness has many benefits, but it is not merely relaxing, sitting, or concentrating. In Buddhism, meditation means building up good habits of the mind -- an active way to transform our thoughts and views to nurture our compassion and to see clearly. Buddhist practices such as meditation allow us to leave behind our false projections and uncover the wisdom to be free from negative motivations such as greed, anger, and ignorance. Understanding reality lets us develop our wholesome virtues and attain liberation.

Meditation/mindfulness is a tool that can help us calm our minds, relieve stress, and become healthier. Yet it is not the same as merely relaxing or focusing -- it is an active process to develop and habituate ourselves to positive qualities such as altruistic love and compassion, a starting point to find the root causes of our problems and change them. In Buddhism, meditation gives us the framework that helps us to develop our full potential by understanding the true nature of reality. To be awakened means to see reality as it actually is, not as we think it is, not trapped by our ego, misconceptions, and prejudices. A clear mind is the source of the penetrating wisdom of deep insight -- one that dispels greed, anger, and delusions; one that truly understands cause and effect, interdependence, and impermanence; and thus uncovers the inherent wisdom within. This true wisdom brings us freedom and liberation from sufferings.
But don't just take our word for it. Come try out meditation with us! Even the Buddha himself never claimed to be a god, and said not to rely solely on blind faith of his teachings -- in fact, he encouraged free inquiry, and everything can be personally experienced! In Buddhism, we must practice the path ourselves, as we are responsible for our own thoughts and actions. Only through our own cultivation can we generate boundless compassion and deep insight -- e.g., reading cookbooks or looking at photos of food does not cure our hunger, we must actually choose to eat! |
